The Northeastern US of A is in the grips of a record breaking heatwave with temperatures breaking the 100's. As our usual weather for July tops out in the high 80's, low 90's, this is overwhelming our systems to say the least. We are without air conditioning at home, so we are on the move. Yesterday morning at 7 am, our indoor temperature on our ground floor had cooled down to 82, with (dare I ever so slightly exaggerate) 100% humidity. So, it is off to the grandparents and to the pools of good friends.
Needless to say, cooking in our kitchen has been out of the question. We did grill at the good friends house yesterday. David made steaks from a post 4th of July
So today, in lieu of my usual fare, you get introduced to my girls. Nomi's recently 3, going on 20, and will be starting nursery school in the fall. Dina was born on our wedding anniversary this past year (November 16th)
and just learned how to crawl FAST this week. I shall spend the day trying to prevent them from wreaking havoc in my in laws home, our air conditioned refuge. We will venture out to pick up the CSA, and to deliver Dave to his car back home. He will be installing a window AC unit at the house before he heads off to work (he's one of the managers at a local restaurant). In non-scorching heat, we have a whole house fan that generally does the trick. However, we have conceded that it just cannot compete with this weather, and our energy bills can.
On a housekeeping note, Blogger has gone on the fritz with comments. Forgive me if yours has gotten lost in the shuffle.With any luck, a Cooking with Grandma and Poppa post will make it up this evening. Roasted Garlic Guacamole

Preheat your oven/grill to 400 degrees. Remove the outer wrappings from a head of garlic. Cut off the top. Place it on a large piece of aluminum foil, drizzle with a good amount of olive oil. Place chopped cilantro in and around the garlic. Wrap the aluminum foil around the mixture. Place in the grill/oven for 40-45 minutes. Remove and allow to cool.
Slice up 3 ripe avocados and one plum tomato. Place two avocados into your serving bowl, along with the plum tomato, a large amount of lime juice, salt and pepper. Open up the garlic packet and pour the olive oil into the bowl. Add cilantro and squeeze out garlic cloves into the bowl. Combine. Add remaining avocado and fold in. Serve to oohs, ahhs, and toasts to Eva. Share and enjoy!
